Living Well on Your Retirement Budget

Not everyone has been able to recover from the recession and now more than ever retirees and soon -to-be's are looking to rv's for solutions to their limited retirement budgets. RV's provide the best of both worlds, lodging and transportation combined. Modern RV's also feature the comforts of luxurious living. This article shares great tips for retirees.
When Gary Pierce, a former commercial real estate broker, retired 20 years ago, he and his wife moved out of their house and onto a sailboat in the Caribbean. Although they had to purchase the boat – he says a comfortable one goes for about $50,000 – they cut their living expenses to less than $1,000 a month. "Instead of buying tailored suits and a Hermès tie, you can just slip on swim trunks," he says. They lived on their boat for eight years before switching to an RV, which they drove around the United States for four years. "It's more affordable than a house," Pierce says, adding that there's no pressure to keep up with the neighbors.

RV Retirement on the Open Road

The RV retirement life is loaded with convenient benefits. The most commonly treasured benefit is the ability to connect with others outside of the hustle and bustle of modern day American life. RV retirees have created a tribe of there own. Inside this tribe your former career or economic standing won't win points. Status is earned by your road trip adventures and the journey you're seeking.
The best estimates say 750,000 to one million retirees call R.V.s home, according to Kevin Broom, director of media relations for the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association. He said independent studies suggested their ranks were growing. Although the recession took a toll on sales of new R.V.s, the number of R.V. owners 55 and older increased 20 percent, to 3.6 million, from 2005 through 2011. That is not surprising. “We are seeing a lot more people, 55, 57, 58, who got laid off and decided they couldn’t handle retirement,” said David Gorin, an industry consultant from McLean, Va. “We’re also seeing more people who can use technology to work from the road and those who have just decided, ‘Let’s enjoy life while we can.

Full-Time RV Living in Retirement

You've worked your whole life. Saved for retirement but you're still unsure about the next phase of life. Living your retirement inside an RV while traveling the country is becoming increasingly popular. Here are a few tips to walk you through the lifestyle that accompanies living in an RV full-time.
Let’s start with the obvious. Having less space, you’ll need to own and transport less stuff. However that’s not as significant a limitation as you might think. Our small Class B van-based RV is still able to hold an astounding number of possessions. In fact, we just had an excellent illustration of this when we unpacked our van, over the space of half a day, into a one bedroom apartment, about 600 square feet in size. Other than furniture, virtually all the personal possessions needed to outfit our apartment and live our life — clothing, linens, dishes and utensils, toiletries, computers, office supplies, tools, bicycles, gear, and several days worth of groceries — had fit well in the van!

Lynn and JC MacNaught initially wanted to escape the cold of winter while traveling the U.S. in their 34-foot travel trailer looking for a warmer place to settle. “Even though our original goal was to find someplace warmer, we quickly realized that there was an opportunity for us to try out two retirement options at once. We’re able to test the full-timer lifestyle (living full time in an RV) while exploring potential areas where we might settle permanently if we decide to hang up the keys,” says Lynn.

RV sales also are encouraging for the U.S. economy because they’re “very discretionary” and have a strong correlation with consumer confidence, Curtin said. An index of buying conditions for large household durables held at 141 in June and has averaged almost 132 since the recession that ended in June 2009, according to the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan consumer survey. More broadly, sentiment measured by the Bloomberg Consumer Comfort Index rose to 37.6 (COMFCOMF) for the week ended July 6, the highest in more than two months.

If you have never taken an RV somewhere, and you are considering it, think about setting your first destination to Florida. The following article highlights all of the amazing reasons Florida makes a great camping and vacation spot.

Florida possesses an embarrassment of riches in luxury accommodations at resorts and hotels, a huge draw for almost everyone vacationing in the state, whether residents or out-of-staters. But the state also has a wealth of more primitive accommodations: national, state and county parks looking out on scenery uniquely Floridian and unquestionably gorgeous.

Cheap Family Vacation Spots!

Families often factor in many things when considering a vacation spot, and one of the main concerns is monetary. Your kids probably have their destination picked out, and it probably doesn't coincide with the adult's dream spot. How can everyone compromise? Portland is a foodie favorite known for two things: creativity and affordability. Start your noshing with the city’s famous food carts. Go to Foodcartsportland.com (or download their 99 cent app) to get the scoop on where to find the most mouthwatering options. One to try: Gastro Mania, home of the $8 foie gras burger. Check Under the Table with Jen, a local food blog run by Jen Stevenson, for sit-down eats. For an evening of wine, cheese, and charcuterie, Stevenson recommends Cyril’s: “It has a ‘secret’ patio, and they just added a bocce court.” Finally, don’t leave town without a stop at the legendary Voodoo Doughnuts, one of the originators of the creative doughnut craze.
